Knock Knock: New Music! 3/19/2018

Hello and welcome to a new week! Spring arrives on Tuesday, but you wouldn't know it from the thermometer, which sits at a nice frosty 19-degrees this morning in the Boston area. The International Day of Happiness happens on Wednesday just ahead of a potential Nor'easter on Thursday. Oh well, we'll still have music to listen to while we wait for Spring to arrive in-earnest here in New England... Sometime around June.

From the music history files for this week: Pink Floyd, U2, and The Police signed their first record contracts and Lou Reed was bitten in the rear by a crazed fan at a show in Buffalo, New York. The fan screamed "Leather!" before taking a chomp. Billboard published the first U.S. album chart.

Nat King Cole's "Collection Of Favorites" was the first to sit at #1 on the chart.

This week saw past album releases from Pixies, Depeche Mode (two different albums,) Muse,

Talking Heads, Ben Folds Five, and The Pet Shop Boys. Birthdays? Sure... Damon Albarn of

Gorillaz and Blur turns 50 on Friday. Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell celebrated his 52nd birthday yesterday and The CarsRic Ocasek will be 74 on Friday. Nick Lowe has a 69th birthday this Saturday and the late Vivian Stanshall of The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band would have turned 75 on Wednesday. You are very likely to hear more about that band on Friday... You have been warned!

I did a little record shopping over the weekend and paid a visit to Listen Up! Music in Natick. Nice folks there and I picked-up a copy of Ezra's Furman's February release, "Transangelic Exodus." Great album and I found it on purple vinyl (one of my two favorite colors!)

My first artist this week is Francobollo. They're a four-piece indie-rock band out of Lund, Sweden. They got together in 2010 and eventually moved to London so they would have the opportunity to play more live gigs. Over time they picked up a new bassist and signed with Square Leg Records.

Their debut EP, "Wonderful" was released in 2016 and their first LP, "Long Live Life," followed the next year. They played to a packed-venue last week at SXSW and they have a brand new single just out. Check-out the official music video for "Hoo Ha." The band had some fun playing with green-screen video effects and some other odd techniques that reportedly crashed their editing computer more than a few times.

My second artist this week on Knock Knock: New Music! is a band called Stats. They're a

"minimal-pop" act out of London. Their debut single, "2 Minds" came out in 2013 followed by an EP the next year. Their 2016 full-length album, "Temping" was released digitally and as a limited-edition cassette, which sold-out. Now we have a new single, which is out digitally and as a limited-edition 7-inch vinyl '45. Have a look (and a listen) at the music video for "Rhythm Of The Heart." It features some interesting dance improv from a bar owner after he's kicked everyone out for the night.
