DAY-30: The 31-Days of Halloween

It's almost here! Welcome to the day before Halloween. It some parts of the country tonight is the night that ill-mannered youth head out with their rolls of toilet paper, cans of shaving cream, and rotten eggs. It's known in some places as Cabbage Night. Find-out more about that in my post from October 18th about "The Crow." If cabbage and rotten eggs are not quite your cup-of-tea, today is also National Candy Corn Day.

I have a belated birthday to get to today, as I was focused on the 25th Anniversary of "The Nightmare Before Christmas" in yesterday's blog-entry. I saved-it for today, because as I looked over the filmography of this actress, I realized just how many Sci-Fi/Horror productions she's been involved-in. Happy Belated Birthday to Winona Ryder, who turned 47 yesterday!

Winona starred as the goth teen, Lydia in Tim Burton's 1988 film, "Beetlejuice," and would appear in two more Burton productions, starring opposite Johnny Depp in 1990's "Edward Scissorhands" and providing the voice of Elsa Van Helsing in the 2012 movie, "Frankenweenie." She played the role of Mina Murray/Elisabeta in "Bram Stoker's Dracula" and starred alongside Sigourney Weaver in 1997's "Alien: Resurrection." She even had a role in the Star Trek franchise, as the alternate-universe version of Spock's mother, Amanda Grayson in the 2009 Star Trek reboot.

Ryder stormed back into the world of Sci-Fi and horror again in 2016 as frenetic mom, Joyce Byers in the award-winning Netflix series, "Stranger Things." All in all I'd say she has a pretty solid Halloween resume!

Today's music selection comes to us from a movie that came out when Winona Ryder was four, so there's no connection here. I'm talking about The Rocky Horror Picture Show! Initially ignored and panned by audiences & critics alike in its initial release in 1975, it wasn't until audiences in late-night screenings in New York City began talking back to the film, that it took on a whole new life as an audience-participation cult-classic.

Written by Richard O'Brien (who also stars as lab-assistant, Riff Raff,) the movie follows the strange evening that unfolds when just engaged couple Brad & Janet (Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick) seek refuge in a castle after getting a flat tire in a rain storm. There they encounter the mad scientist Dr. Frank N. Furter (played by Tim Curry.) This wild fun ride is packed with musical numbers. We started our countdown back on October 1st with "Science Fiction Double Feature..." Today we add the song that just makes me think "Halloween" every time I hear it. So let's do it... Let's do "TheTime Warp" again! - Kristen
