Lights-Camera-30 Countdown

#18 Kimbra

It seems like 2011 was a lifetime ago. In the Fall of that year, I had just returned home from an incredible two-week road trip through Baja Mexico and got back to the business of searching for new music for my morning show on 90.7 FM WKKL (which I had resumed doing from 2007 to 2013 on Friday mornings in addition to my afternoon traffic duties on WBZ NewsRadio 1030 in Boston.) I came across a music video from a Belgian/Australian artist I had never heard of but was steadily building momentum in Australia and Europe: Gotye. I added the track, "Somebody that I Used to Know" to my show, but had no idea just how much this song was about to explode worldwide after it officially hit America the following year. While that certainly was a great song, I was also interested in learning more about the guest vocalist, Kimbra.

Kimbra Lee Johnson (she performs as just Kimbra) is a singer/songwriter from Hamilton, New Zealand. As Gotye's song burned-up the charts, I discovered that Kimbra had released her own debut album entitled, "Vows" in 2011. When all was said and done three tracks off her LP eclipsed "Somebody that I Used to Know" in airplay on my show.

Kimbra's second album, "The Golden Echo" followed in 2014 and I was delighted to learn that a third LP, "Primal Heart" was on the way for 2018. Some production delays pushed the release date from January to April, but she started her world tour on-time in January with the first tour-stop at The Paradise in Boston. That was my first live show of the year and I was not disappointed! I'm going with the second single off the record. It's called "Top of the World" and it's #18 on the Lights-Camera-30 countdown!

Today's photo selection features an aerial shot taken of the Boston skyline just before sunrise in early January of this year. As you can the see, the holiday lighting is still up along the edges of the Boston Common. Anniversary-30 Countdown

#18 The Sugarcubes

The Anniversary-30 countdown brings us back to my first year in radio and the 1988 debut album from The Sugarcubes. Hailing from Reykjavík, Iceland they first got together in 1986 and are regarded as one of the biggest rock bands to come-out of Iceland. An even bigger future loomed-ahead, though, for their lead-singer Björk when she launched her solo-career in 1993 (you may very well run into that album later-on in the countdown!) From The Sugarcubes debut entitled, "Life's Too Good," I'm adding the tune, "Birthday" to the Anniversary-30 playlist. Happy listening! -Kristen
