Kristen Eck's 2019 30/30 Countdown: #16

Updated: Dec 22, 2019

Hope you’ve been enjoying the 2019 30/30 Countdown so far! Brooklyn musician, producer, and DJ Will Holland (otherwise known as Quantic) grabs #16 in my Favorite-30.

Will Holland as Quantic

His new LP, “Atlantic Oscillations” came-out last June on Tru-Thoughts Recordings. It weaves electronic & dance grooves with orchestral elements… Very cool! I’m going with the tune, “You Used to Love Me,” featuring NYC artist, Denitia on vocals.

25-years-ago we were introduced to "Dummy," the debut LP, from British Trip-Hop group, Portishead. Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons, and Adrian Utley combined some unusual instruments and techniques to create a uniquely creepy spacey mood.

Not only did they sample other people’s music, but they also recorded their own tunes onto vinyl-records, intentionally damaged them, and then sampled-them for the actual songs they were working on. The record won high praise from the critics and beat-out Oasis (“Definitely Maybe”) for Britain’s Mercury Prize.

As a big Trip-Hop fan, I think “Dummy” is a must-own album. Check-out this track that samples “Ike’s Rap II” by Isaac Hayes. It’s called “Glory Box” and it’s #16 on the Anniversary-30 Countdown. Happy listening! -Kristen
