Kristen Eck's 2019 30/30 Countdown: Christmas Day Music Bonanza

2019 FAVORITE-30 COUNTDOWN: #12, #11, #10

Hi it’s Kristen! We’re still getting back on-track with the 2019 Favorite-30 Countdown and I thought why not load-this up with a bunch of tunes for you to enjoy over the Christmas holiday? At #12 we have composer & multi-instrumentalist Rob Burger. His new album, “The Grid” came out in June. Have a listen to the tune “Souls Of Winter” featuring Laurie Anderson on vocals.

Kate Tempest is a spoken-word-performer, rapper, poet, novelist, and playwright from London. That’s a lot of stuff… Her voice captures your attention, but it’s her words that hold onto it. “The Book of Traps And Lessons” is her new album and I find this dystopian track darkly mesmerizing. It’s called “Three Sided Coin” and it’s #11.

British three-piece band, The Comet Is Coming grabs the #10 spot in my favorite new tunes of the year. Led by Shabaka Hutchings on saxophone they have their own brand of Jazz, Electronica, Psychedelic, and Funk. Check-out the the explosive tune: “Summon The Fire.”

2019 ANNIVERSARY-30 COUNTDOWN: #12, #11

I’ve got a couple big albums to chat with you about as we approach the Top-10 in the Anniversary-30. At #12 is the 1969 debut album from English progressive-rock pioneers, King Crimson.

“In The Court Of The Crimson King” wasn’t quite like anything else out there 50-years ago and would influence the music of bands like Yes, early Genesis, and many others. This is one of two albums to feature Greg Lake on lead vocals before he left to form Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. Throw-on a good set of headphones and drift-away with the track, “Epitaph.”

In 1989 the Beastie Boys were riding high on the success of their debut LP, “Licensed To Ill,” but were in danger of becoming a passing novelty...One hit wonders. That’s when they fired super-producer Rick Rubin and brought in a pair of obscure producers from L.A. known as the Dust Brothers. These two wove a dense tapestry of hundreds of samples taken from other artists into the musical backbone for new rhymes from Ad Rock, Mike D, and MCA.

The resulting album, “Paul’s Boutique” became a landmark release in Hip Hop and sampling and transformed the Beasties from Top-40 one-hit-wonders to darlings of the Alternative music world. I still remember playing this track on college radio for the first time, 30-years-ago! It’s “Hey Ladies” and it’s #11 on the Anniversary-30 Countdown. Happy listening! -Kristen
