Kristen Eck's Favorite-30 Countdown: #6, #5, #4

Hello there! We’re getting down to it here on the 2019 Favorite-30 Countdown. I first heard Boston rapper Guru on his 1993 "Jazzmatazz Vol. 1" album, where he mixed Hip Hop & Jazz together. He was also part of the Brooklyn Hip Hop duo Gang Starr. When Guru passed-away after a battle with Cancer in 2010, there were a number of unreleased vocals of his still in the vaults.

Guru

Gang Starr partner, DJ Premier has taken some of those vocals, written new beats, and created the first Gang Starr album since 2003. “One Of The Best Yet” was out in November and I have to say hearing Guru’s voice again on this new song sent a chill down my spine… It’s “Family And Loyalty” (featuring J. Cole) and it’s #6.

At #5 is London Trip-Hop act, HÆLOS. They released their second LP, “Any Random Kindness” back in May. I saw them a month earlier at Brighton Music Hall in Boston, where they put on a fabulous show. They were also a bunch of nice folks to talk to afterwards! Check-out the tune “Kyoto.”

Brighton, England's Squid

We’re heading South out of London to Brighton, England for this next track from Squid. They’re a five-piece Post Punk outfit, that may have that label simply because it’s almost impossible to figure out exactly what they do… And that’s a good thing! The manic-energy of Squid begins with their lead singer Ollie Judge, who is also the drummer. Have a listen to “Houseplants.” It’s #4 on the Favorite-30 Countdown. Happy listening! -Kristen
