MiXeD-Up MeMoRiEs: 8/7/2019

I know it’s August, but I do have one more July album to chat with you about on Mixed-Up Memories before we venture-forth into the dog-days of Summer. As a matter of fact, I would say that this record is a must-listen for the rest of your Summer if you haven't heard it yet! It was on July 3rd, 1969 that the debut album from a very talented, but overlooked artist named Nick Drake was released.

Drake was an English songwriter, who struggled with depression. He died in 1974 at the age of 26 from an overdose of antidepressants. While his contemporaries in Brian Wilson and Syd Barrett gained notoriety in their struggles, Drake and his music were washed-away & forgotten in an era that rewarded personalities.

Childhood friend, Robert Kirby, who arranged much of Drake’s first two albums called him “elegant, honest, a romantic.” His producer Joe Boyd said, “He had a gift of writing melodies of incredible beauty.”

Despite selling less than four-thousand albums during his lifetime, Nick Drake’s records finally found an audience many years later and have sold over two-million copies since. His debut LP, “Five Leaves Left” just turned 50! Let’s celebrate with “River Man.” It’s waiting for you now on the Mixed-Up Memories playlist. Happy Listening! -Kristen
